The world was not made to make sense. When things are explained logically or rationally they become boring. Things that are outlandish, nonsensical, or mysterious are interesting.
Sir Terry Pratchett phrased this perfectly in ‘Hogfather.’ “Humans need fantasy to be human. Without it the sun would not rise. A mere flaming ball of gas would illuminate the world.”
Things that are impossible are always more interesting than things that are true. And much of the fantasy genre today owes a great debt to Lewis Carroll. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and Through The Looking Glass are full of much of the most interesting hogwash that has ever been published.
Happy Birthday Lewis Carroll!
